What Parents Need to Know

Methamphetamine (speed) also known as, Benzedrine, is a prescription stimulant commonly used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. It is also used to treat symptoms of the daytime drowsiness symptoms of narcolepsy and chronic fatigue syndrome. Initially it was more popularly used to diminish the appetite to control weight.

Amphetamines are a highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system and how it affects your body varies from person to person. (Weight, height, general health, mood or the environment their in, whether alone, with others, at a party etc.) Even in small doses it can increase physical activity, alertness and decrease appetite.

Since tolerance is developed rapidly, it increases the amount of drug which is needed to be satisfied. Many users will repeat the amphetamine cycle by taking more of the drug during the “crash” period. This leads to a very dangerous cycle and may involve the use of other drugs to get over the withdrawal process. Chronic users of amphetamines typically snort or resort to drug injection to experience the full effects of the drug in a faster and more intense way. This also increases the risks of infection, vein damage and overdose.
